What shall we discuss about people and welfare?

New systems, automation, enhanced connectivity and digital tools are becoming part of our everyday life at sea. Technology is improving communication and enabling better access to support when times get tough. On the flip side, it can also introduce new or additional pressures, expectations and challenges for seafarers’ wellbeing.

This space is for seafarers and maritime industry professionals to talk freely about how technology impacts welfare, mental health and the overall human experience of working at sea in a modern, technological world.

Does technology genuinely improve quality of life onboard, or does it sometimes cause more isolation, increase workload or introduce extra stress? How do digital systems, connectivity and modern ways of working affect rest, relationships, morale and psychological safety at sea?

Wellbeing today includes more than physical safety. It involves mental health, fatigue, workload management, social connection, access to support and feeling valued and supported both onboard and ashore.

We want to hear real experiences, including:

  • Has improved internet access and connectivity enhanced your wellbeing at sea?

  • Does your ship not have internet access and you feel left out or undervalued?

  • Do expectations to remain constantly connected create pressure or reduce rest time?

  • Do digital reporting and monitoring systems support crews or add stress and workload?

  • Do you feel monitored like ‘big brother’ is watching, with CCTV, sensors and other monitoring technologies?

  • Does technology help you feel more supported by shore management, or less trusted?

  • How has communication with family changed your experience of seafaring?

  • Do you find welfare apps, helplines or remote support services accessible and useful?

  • Does increased automation change teamwork, social interaction or crew cohesion onboard?

  • Are younger and newer seafarers experiencing shipboard life differently because of technology?

  • Do new technologies ever contribute to fatigue, distraction or information overload?

  • What improvements would genuinely enhance wellbeing at sea in a more digital industry?

This forum welcomes experiences from all ranks, departments, vessel types and regions — from trainee ratings to Masters, Engineers to ETOs, Environmental Officers to Catering staff.

The aim is simple: we want seafarers’ views to be heard to understand how technology can support welfare and wellbeing without creating unintended pressures.

Your experience helps shape a healthier and more human-centred future at sea.
